Hot Wheels we used: boosters, Race Crate and Mega Hauler

Four Hot Wheels sets our boys use: a small booster, a larger powered track, a folding race set and a car hauler. The motors get loud, and the loaded truck can tip.

Quick answer

The small Booster Pack makes sense if your kid already owns track. Ultra Boost is a bigger powered build with pieces we have stacked. Race Crate is the folding race toy; Mega Hauler is for loading cars. I would choose by whether your kid wants to build track, race four cars or load them onto a truck. We used all four, and neither powered set is quiet.

Before you buy

  • Powered or unpowered: The two boosters need D batteries. Race Crate and Mega Hauler do not.
  • Track building or car carrying: Mega Hauler carries cars; the other three products add boosts or race layouts.
  • Age on the package: Mattel’s service ages span 3+ for Mega Hauler through 6–12 for Ultra Boost.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

We put rechargeable batteries in our Booster Pack to avoid buying new ones, although Mattel lists two D alkaline batteries for GBN81. The pictures were staged from verified model photos; they don't show our house or our actual toys. The Hauler pictured has the CKC09 mechanism, but its cab art differs from ours, which has a 50 badge.

  • The exact Mattel models are GBN81, GWT44, GKT87 and CKC09. I used their maker pages for ages, batteries and box contents.
  • The Race Crate instructions list three builds and two included cars. Our four-car loop races use additional cars.
  • I did not time a race, count a full Hauler load or measure battery life. The loud motors and tip-prone full truck are what we noticed at home.

Matt is a Seattle dad of two boys, six and three. He's an engineer by habit and would rather read the spec sheet twice than send something back. Most guides here are research: product listings, safety guidance, recall records and what owners keep complaining about. The few things his family has actually used are marked personally tested, and nothing else is dressed up to look that way. He also keeps a weekly list of federal recalls on children's products.
