Why these four made the shortlist

Every pair here is waterproof, so the choice comes down to torso coverage and whether a kid can get them down without help in a school bathroom

• Oaki Trail wins for kids who are outside every day. A school kid managing alone does better with Jan & Jul’s elastic waist, while a toddler who sits in water needs Reima’s bib. Columbia is the cheaper route when rain is occasional.
• Snow pants and lightly water-resistant play pants didn’t make the list. They’re for warmth or drizzle, which is a different problem.
