Gifts for kids that actually get used.

Most gift guides are lists of things nobody has touched. This one starts with what is still in our house. Our boys are six and three, so the picks skew to those ages, and every card says whether we tested it or only researched it. I kept the list short on purpose. A gift that sits in a closet is a chore with wrapping paper.

Gifts for a 2 to 3 year old

Four kids sleep-training clocks on a child's bedroom dresser

Hatch Rest

Personally tested. Both boys still use it as a night light, and it turns green at 7 a.m. It is a sleep routine more than a toy.

Four preschool water bottles beside a lunchbox, backpack, bottle brush, and straw parts

CamelBak, Klean Kanteen and Takeya bottles

Personally tested. Sturdy and in daily use; the CamelBak leaked until we swapped the straw.

Mud-covered yellow Okabashi Kendall rain boots worn with rain pants outdoors

Okabashi Kendall rain boots

Personally tested. Easy for them to put on and kept feet dry in puddles. A mild-weather boot, not a snow boot.

Natural wood Guidecraft Classic Kitchen Helper tower with star cutouts beside kitchen cabinets

Little Partners Learning Tower

Personally tested. The oldest used it at three to four to cook at the counter. Heavy and awkward, but it got him up to us.

Gifts for a 4 to 6 year old

Our Yoto Player 3rd Generation in its blue Adventure Jacket beside cards on a keychain

Yoto Player, 3rd generation

Personally tested. Both boys listen before bed; the battery and the app both work well. Not the Mini or the second generation.

MindWare Marble Run and Q-BA-Maze 2.0 staged side by side on a wooden floor by a sofa

MindWare and Q-BA-Maze marble runs

Personally tested. Both still get built; MindWare is easier for them to assemble, and marbles get lost.

Child holding the adjustable bar of a blue and yellow GOMO three-wheel scooter on dry pavement

GOMO and Mini Micro scooters

Personally tested. The oldest learned to scooter before a bike; the bar adjusts as they grow. Wet use can damage the bearings.

Close owner photo of the larger visored bright-green Giro Hale MIPS against a shaded metal shelter

Giro Hale MIPS helmet

Personally tested. The dial is easy and it stayed put from preschool through six. Replace it after a crash or about five years.

Our Wildkin Jurassic Dinosaurs 12-inch backpack hanging on a dining chair

Wildkin 12-inch backpack

Personally tested. The small body fits a kindergartener without swallowing him; the zippers held up. A rigid folder may not fit.

Owner-used Crayola Super Tips 100-count marker box open on a family art table

Crayola Super Tips markers

Personally tested. Comfortable in small hands, easy caps, easy cleanup.

Unopened natural geodes and one beige dinosaur excavation egg on a tray with clear safety goggles

National Geographic geode and jumbo dinosaur egg kits

Personally tested. The oldest finished both and preferred the egg. Marked 8+, and the geodes needed my chisel and hammer.

What we would skip

Proprietary batteries that kill the toy when the charger is lost, giant plush that lives on the floor, anything you have to assemble at 11 p.m., and sets with tiny parts for a two-year-old.

Questions

Why so few picks?

We only list what we would actually give. A longer list means weaker picks.

Do you test everything?

No. Each pick says whether we tested it or only researched it.

Do you make money if I buy?

Some links are affiliate links. They do not change the list.
