Ok-to-wake clocks: Hatch Rest, Mella and Groclock

Hatch Rest pairs its wake light with a sound machine and an app. The Mella’s sleeping face and the Groclock’s sun and stars need no phone at all.

Quick answer

Start with the Hatch Rest (2nd Generation) if you want the night light, the sound machine and the wake cue in one box and don’t mind the app. LittleHippo’s Mella uses a face toddlers read at a glance, with no app at all. The Tommee Tippee Groclock is the plain sun-and-star display, though a lot of parents find its buttons confusing.

Before you buy

  • App dependency: If the goal is a simple morning without screens, the basics can’t depend on a phone.
  • Age range and developmental fit: Toddlers and preschoolers understand different things. The cue has to match the child’s age, or the clock won’t do its job as a sleep trainer.
  • Visual wake indicator clarity: Young kids can’t read a clock. Stay in bed and okay to get up have to look obviously different, even to a toddler who’s barely awake.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • Took each clock’s age range and type of cue, whether color, face or symbol, from the maker’s page.
  • Parent threads on r/toddlers, r/Parenting and r/UKParenting supplied the after-purchase view. Groclock owners keep getting lost in the buttons, and Hatch owners say kids need weeks to months of consistent use before they wait for the color.
  • Noted which clock needs a phone for what. The Hatch Rest keeps core controls on the device, and the Mella and Groclock work with no app.
