Baby blankets for strollers, floor time, and daycare

Aden + Anais muslin for warm stroller rides, a 47-inch Little Unicorn quilt for floor time, and why none of these four go in a baby’s crib.

Quick answer

Loose blankets do not belong in an infant sleep space. For infant sleep, use a firm, flat sleep surface with only a fitted sheet; use these blankets only for supervised awake floor time, supervised awake stroller rides with the blanket secured over the child's legs and kept away from the face and stroller opening, caregiver-held warmth, gifting, and daycare situations where current guidance and provider rules allow them.

Can babies sleep with blankets?

For infant sleep, use a firm, flat sleep surface with only a fitted sheet. The AAP and CPSC advise keeping loose blankets and other soft objects out of the crib, bassinet, or play yard; a breathable fabric does not create an exception.

  • Worried about warmth? Use properly fitted sleep clothing, following its current manufacturer instructions, instead of a loose blanket.
  • If you swaddle, follow current AAP guidance and stop once the baby shows signs of trying to roll. Never use a weighted swaddle or a weighted blanket.
  • Awake time is a different matter. A blanket can cover supervised floor time or add warmth while a caregiver holds the baby, and it goes to daycare only if the provider’s rules allow it. They make good gifts, too.
  • A retailer’s age label is not safe-sleep clearance. For advice about your own child, ask your pediatrician.

Common questions

Can babies sleep with a blanket in their crib or cot?

No. The AAP and CPSC say a baby should sleep on a firm, flat surface with only a fitted sheet, and no loose blankets in the crib, bassinet or play yard. Breathable muslin isn’t an exception. For an older baby, ask your pediatrician when a blanket is okay rather than going by the age on a product label.

What is a good breathable blanket for a stroller or pram?

Of these four, the Aden + Anais muslin four-pack breathes best. Its 44-by-44-inch squares fold flat for warm-weather rides, but thin muslin isn’t warm, so cold days need a second layer. Only use a stroller blanket while the baby is awake and supervised, secured over the legs and kept away from the face and the stroller opening.

What is the best baby blanket?

Start with the Aden + Anais muslin four-pack, four machine-washable swaddles for stroller rides, nursing and backup, though they breathe better than they warm. For one simple organic cotton blanket, get the Burt’s Bees Baby Hello Moon. The 47-by-47-inch Little Unicorn quilt is the gift, and the Copper Pearl knit is the stretchy swaddle.

Before you buy

  • Fabric, warmth, and everyday use: Muslin, organic cotton and knit differ in warmth, bulk and how they wash. None of them makes a loose blanket safe for infant sleep.
  • Dimensions and versatility: Size decides the job. Swaddling a newborn takes a big square, while a blanket tucked over a child’s legs on an awake stroller ride gets unwieldy if it’s too large.
  • Care and wash durability: Baby blankets get washed constantly, the daycare ones most of all. Shrinkage and pilling decide how long one stays nice to use.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • Matched each blanket to its listing, then checked the fabric, the intended use and the size.
  • Kept the muslin four-pack out of a head-to-head with the Little Unicorn gift quilt or the Copper Pearl knit, since people buy them for different reasons.
  • Kept every infant sleep statement apart from the awake uses, such as supervised stroller rides and floor time.
