Kids room humidifiers, and how hard each one is to clean

Levoit’s 6-liter tank opens wide enough to scrub by hand. Crane’s Drop does not. Four kids-room humidifiers, and what cleaning each one really takes.

Quick answer

Buy the humidifier you’ll really clean. For most kids’ rooms that’s the Levoit Classic 300S, because a hand fits in the tank. The Honeywell HCM350 is the no-white-dust option if you’ll keep buying wicks. The Crane Drop and Vicks V4600 cost less but have narrow tanks, and stale water in a tank nobody scrubs is the real problem.

Before you buy

  • Tank access and cleaning routine: A humidifier is worth running only if the tank and base get scrubbed on schedule. How big the opening is decides whether that happens.
  • Tank size and refill frequency: If the tank runs dry in the middle of the night or needs filling every evening, the humidifier ends up in the closet.
  • Filter type and ongoing cost: A wick avoids white dust, but you replace it regularly. Filter-free ultrasonics move that cost to distilled water or demineralization cartridges instead.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • Can you get a hand inside the tank to clean it? And can you buy replacement filters easily?
  • Read the maker’s current guidance on cleaning frequency, water type and placement, and which parts must stay out of the dishwasher.
  • Look through recent reviews for the same complaint showing up over and over: leaks, white dust, a noisy fan, app trouble or a tank that won’t dry.
  • If your child has asthma, breathing problems or symptoms that don’t go away, ask a pediatrician.

The few things his family has actually used are marked personally tested, and nothing else is dressed up to look that way. He also keeps a weekly list of federal recalls on children's products.
