Volume-limited headphones for toddlers on planes

Belkin’s SoundForm Mini folds into a carry-on, CozyPhones hide the speakers in a fleece headband, and BuddyPhones need no charging. Four pairs.

Quick answer

For most trips, start with the Belkin SoundForm Mini. It’s volume-limited, wireless and folds up, provided your kid will wear on-ear cups. A kid who refuses anything over the ears should go straight to the CozyPhones headband. For plane screens and a wire that just works, get the BuddyPhones Travel pair.

Before you buy

  • Volume limiting: Small ears are still developing, and hours of travel listening can damage hearing if nothing caps the volume.
  • Fit and sizing: On a long flight or car ride, headphones have to stay put on a small head without pinching.
  • Wired vs. wireless connectivity: Bluetooth means a battery that can die. A seatback screen may only take a cable.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • Checked each maker’s page for the age range, the headband style and whether the pair folds or ships with a case.
  • Looked for the complaints parents only have after a trip. The big two were kids who won’t keep them on and volume limits too quiet for a plane.
  • Read how each maker describes its volume limit, then weighed parent reports that the caps run too quiet on planes.

The few things his family has actually used are marked personally tested, and nothing else is dressed up to look that way. He also keeps a weekly list of federal recalls on children's products.
