Lotion for kids with dry skin: CeraVe, Vanicream, Aquaphor

CeraVe Baby for the everyday pump, Vanicream when fragrance is the worry, Aquaphor for very dry spots. Four researched picks, with eczema caveats.

Quick answer

Start with CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Lotion. It’s light, it has ceramides, and the pump works one-handed. If fragrance and dyes are what you’re avoiding, Vanicream Moisturizing Cream is thicker and stripped down. Aveeno’s baby lotion is the quick after-bath pump, and Aquaphor’s ointment is for the very dry spots. Patch-test when it makes sense, and check the size, format and seller on the listing.

Before you buy

  • Moisturizing ingredients: Petrolatum, as in Aquaphor, seals a dry spot from the outside. Ceramides, as in the CeraVe lotion, target the skin barrier itself, so the two do different jobs and owners often layer them.
  • Texture and absorption: A kid who hates a thick or greasy feel will fight you on it. Some kids won’t put up with Aquaphor’s greasiness, while CeraVe and Aveeno go on lighter.
  • Fragrance and sensitivity profile: Fragrance and common irritants can make dry skin worse or set off a reaction in eczema-prone and sensitive kids. CeraVe, Vanicream and Aveeno are all fragrance-free, and Vanicream also leaves out dyes, lanolin and parabens.
  • Any product: check current recall information before buying — the kids' product recall tracker lists recent CPSC recalls of children's products.

How I narrowed it down

  • On each maker’s page, noted whether the product is baby-branded, what age it’s meant for, and whether it’s a lotion, cream or ointment.
  • Read parent threads on r/NewParents, r/Mommit and r/beyondthebump for what happens after purchase, like a light lotion wearing off or an ointment that only seals.
  • Went through each ingredient list for ceramides, petrolatum and the other moisturizers doing the work.

Most guides here are research: product listings, safety guidance, recall records and what owners keep complaining about. The few things his family has actually used are marked personally tested, and nothing else is dressed up to look that way. He also keeps a weekly list of federal recalls on children's products.
